Sarasota Fiber Artist Supports Colombian Women

Monica Londoño, acclaimed and award winning Colombian artist, uses her extraordinary weaving skills to help support women heads of families who have been displaced by the civil war in Colombia. The women grow and harvest the sisal plants, spin, wash and dye the fiber that becomes Londoño’s source of sisal material which Londoño purchases. It then becomes incorporated into her work.
Londoño works skillfully in the old technique of plain Tafetan, creating shapes and forms that emulate the reality of nature. Her fibers are crossed, interlaced, en-torched, tightened, violent and assembled threads. She is inspired by the twists and turns of urban tree textures and other natural forms. The materials vary from natural fibers such as jute, cotton, sisal, and hemp to barbed wire, twigs, leaves and tree bark, parts of old looms, recycled metals, and weaving needles. The result is unusually beautiful wall hangings and three dimensional standing artwork.
An exhibition not to be missed, now showing at The Dancing Crane Gallery through February 25th. 1019 10th Ave W, Bradenton FL 34205. 941.744.1333. www.dancing-crane.com.
